Session 6 — Kootenay Showcase

Terry Van Horn

Moderator

Terry proudly grew up in Mackenzie BC, a small forestry town in Northern BC. She attended BCIT where she became a chemical technologist and met her husband Jim. After graduation they moved to Prince George where she worked in the brewing and pulp and paper industries for 12 years as a lab technologist.

With an opportunity for her husband to establish a satellite company Terry and her family moved to Trail, BC in 2001. Using her chemical sciences background, her experience working in the industry towns of Mackenzie and Prince George, as well as her newly acquired business diploma from Selkirk College, Terry joined the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) the regional science council in 2004.

During her 8 years at KAST, she learned that collaboration, team work, and relationship building are fundamental to success in rural economic development.  She is proud of her work at KAST especially in establishing the GLOWS (Growing Learning Opportunities with Science) program that now resides with Selkirk College.

Further expanding on her skills and knowledge in 2012, Terry joined the Lower Columbia Initiatives Corporation (LCIC), the regional Economic Development Office for the Trail area. As the Executive Director of the LCIC, she continues to promote opportunities and drive economic and business growth through strategies like the new Metal Tech Alley initiative focused on a cluster approach to marketing the region’s competitive advantages. She excels in creating strong partnerships and selling the viability of the region with a passion like no other.
